Sports Massage
Course Description
This course is designed to teach students advanced concepts of sports massage for practicing massage in a safe and effective manner. It is also designed to help students successfully pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) and also to qualify for certification from the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC).
This 24-hour course includes the following:
Environmental considerations for sports massage, basic first aid for sports events, strategies for hyperthermia and hypothermia, kinesiology of specific sports, targeted massage for common sports, and practice on athletes.
Course Objectives
- Students will be able to describe how environmental factors like weather, topography, altitude, and time changes affect athletic performance.
- Students will be able to describe strategies for addressing environmental factors which affect athletic performance.
- Students will be able to differentiate between the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Students will be able to describe strategies for addressing heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Students will be able to differentiate between frostnip and frostbite.
- Students will be able to describe strategies for addressing frostnip and frostbite.
- Students will be able to describe strategies for addressing common sports injuries like sprains and strains.
- Students will be able to list the muscles most commonly used in common sports like running, cycling, swimming, tennis, football, soccer, baseball, and golf.
- Students will be able to describe strategies for stretching and massaging the muscles most commonly used in sports.
- Students will be able to demonstrate sports massage techniques on athletes.
